Photographing the convex surfaces of the Cycladic architecture.
There are 15 years now of photographing the Cycladic islands, placing special emphasis on old staircases and doorways which they all seem abandoned in a silent world... but somehow show that they have a kind of there on way to speak.
By observing them, I understand more and more the magical world they represent, many years ago the old builders experiment by giving elliptical sculptural forms to the buildings they create by combining the solid structure with the expressive mobility, without any possess of the knowledge we have today however they seem to have conquered a great truth.
Our world is not made out of straight lines but curves. The curve plays a key role both at the psychological and scientific level in the universe we live in and likewise is equally decisive in the Cycladic architecture.
About Doors
I always was fascinated with the concept of doors, But why? The mystery behind the closed doors triggers my imagination. Doors like as everything in nature have contradictory properties, like the Roman god of gates Janus who represented the middle ground between both concrete and abstract dualities with two faces: we see one or the other of the faces depending upon which direction we look from.
Doors are connections, in our real life or in our psychological world we cross all the time, they can lead us just to next room or in another world, is up to us to decide the direction.
We can only imagine the truth behind the closed door till we manage to opened it and then there will be always another door to cross…
Can we see the sound?
Cymatics, experimental photography on water vibrations, these images where made in my studio in Oia using a home made cymatics machine.Sound is an invisible force that permeates every aspect of our lives. Yet if we could see sound our world would be even more beautiful than we could imagine. To see sound is to open a new window onto our world, one that has been veiled in mystery until recently.
Cymatics, the study of wave phenomena and vibration, is a scientific methodology that demonstrates the vibratory nature of matter and the transformational nature of sound. The term (Kymatiks in German), was adapted from the Greek word for wave, to Kyma, in the 1960s by Swiss medical doctor and natural scientist, Hans Jenny.
The Swing of the Pendulum
The pattern which connects.
Epigenesis is a series of photographs that are trying to capture the motion of the pendulum, The essence of epigenesis is predictable repetition; the essence of learning and evolution is exploration and change.
Each long exposure photograph is produced with a small light attached to the bottom of a large Foucault's pendulum that swings and sways moving across a 30 square meters designated space, a pendulum literally is in photographic terms, a pencil of nature. Pendulum’s swings appear random and chaotic at the beginning but when observed for a long time through an open shutter a dance of shifting series of patterns appears as they swing to their own vibrations, the pattern shifts over time, as is held at a height, it possesses potential energy, and as it falls, its potential energy is converted to kinetic energy until finally the pendulums reach his equilibrium state.
